A year has passed: Some of those who lost their sense of smell due to corona have not regained it yet
Loss of the sense of smell is one of the common symptoms of the Coronavirus, and although some were able to regain their sense of smell after recovery, this was not the case for everyone, as some of the recovered were not able to restore their sense of smell yet, even after a year after infection.
According to a new study published in the JAMA Network Open, nearly 4% of people who lost their sense of smell due to infection with the Coronavirus have not yet been able to recover it, although it has been nearly a year since they contracted the virus.
It was noted that these people still had problems in the sense of smell, ranging from a complete inability to smell smells to a weak sense of smell.
During the study, 97 recoveries from the Coronavirus were followed up over a year. At the beginning of the study, the sense of smell of those included in the study was missing due to their infection with the Coronavirus, but at the end of the study, that is, a year after infection, the researchers noted that:
- 96% of those surveyed were able to regain their sense of smell, while 4% had lost their sense of smell.
- Nearly half of the study participants had fully recovered their sense of smell 4 months after the start of the study.
The researchers still couldn't say exactly when the remaining 4% of participants might regain their sense of smell.
Loss of smell: a common symptom of coronavirus
Anosmia, or loss of the sense of smell, is one of the common symptoms of the emerging coronavirus, a condition in which the ability to smell smells is completely or partially lost, but the reason for this type of complications and symptoms is still linked to the Coronavirus, as it was not able to Scientists have yet to find the exact link between them.
Al-Khasham in particular was the difference by which some were able to distinguish their infection with the virus even before the corona examination confirmed the diagnosis.
While some may recover their sense of smell quickly after recovery, others may need several months to recover their sense of smell or at least part of it, and in cases such as those of some of the patients included in the study above, it seems that some may take more than a year!
Researchers are still unable to determine and know whether the loss of the sense of smell after infection with corona could be a permanent complication, as it takes more time and more research to be sure of the answer.
