Study: Having a cold may protect you from corona

Having a cold can be good news in light of the current Corona pandemic. As your body tries to defend itself against cold viruses, your immune system may develop defenses that may increase your body's ability to fight the Coronavirus.

Study: Having a cold may protect you from corona

It showed a new study by researchers at Yale University, USA (Yale University) has recently published its findings in the Journal of Experimental Medicine (The

Journal of Experimental Medicine) that exposure to certain types of viruses that cause cold may make your immune system more resistant to Corona emerging virus.

During the study, researchers investigated the immune reaction to rhinoviruses, one of the most common cold viruses, to note that the immune system's reaction to this type of virus may be effective in fighting the Coronavirus.

To reach the results, the researchers used laboratory-developed tissues similar to human respiratory tract tissues, and they exposed these tissues to rhinoviruses first and then to the emerging coronavirus after that, to note that exposure of the tissues to cold viruses led to the activation of certain immune cells that were later able to stop the spread of the Coronavirus in tissue cells. mentioned as soon as it was exposed.

The aforementioned immune reaction and its effect on the Coronavirus may constitute an important discovery for researchers that can be relied upon to start developing a new drug for the Coronavirus in the future.

A glimmer of hope for a future drug, but...

When the Coronavirus enters the body, it begins to multiply rapidly before the immune system can detect it, and when the immune system detects the virus, it may show a severe reaction to it, so the effectiveness of any drug that can be developed based on the outcomes of this study will depend on the timing of drug administration to the patient.

Giving the patient this new drug immediately after the entry of the Coronavirus into his body is the correct way to benefit from the outputs of this study. As for giving the drug to the patient at an advanced stage of infection with the Coronavirus, it may lead to serious complications.

The drug’s content of immune molecules that may resist the Coronavirus in the early stages of infection is the same that may be responsible for hyperstimulation of immunity if the drug is given to the patient in the advanced stages of infection with Corona.

Therefore, developing a new drug based on the outcomes of this study and benefiting from it may pose a challenge for scientists, as it may be difficult to give the drug to the patient at the right time, especially since the symptoms of corona often do not appear to indicate infection until several days after catching the Coronavirus.

The researchers had previously noted that having a cold may protect against influenza, and from this point of view, the impact of infection with cold viruses on the body’s immunity against the Coronavirus was tested.
